I cuddle my warm cheek into copper silk, finding the pillows cool temperature to be a refreshing kiss in the summer heat. Its plush invites me to sink in deeper into relaxation, but I'm suddenly awakened by movement tipping me over.
"Hm?" I mumble.
"Hey baby," Chris' tired voice trails over me as he slowly raises himself out of bed.
My heart lightly aches, not wanting him to leave my side. I already miss his presence close though I find myself too tired to speak up.
How long have we been asleep? The thought languidly trails past as I watch him behind my lashes.
The crown of his brown hair glows with a ring of dim sunlight spilling in from our windows overhead. He walks beneath its rays around our bed to sit behind me.
It must be late in the afternoon if the sun is on the other side of the house now. Our busy morning seems to have happened days ago. We must have fallen asleep when we were resting together.
I listen as a glass mug quickly drags against the wood of his nightstand.
Tea? I wonder.
I realize he isn't going far, so I allow myself to relax and drift back to sleep.
Summer wind blowing into our bedroom windows rustle some hair at my neck. I experience this, smiling to myself as I use the nook of my inner elbow to cradle my heavy head. Satisfied comfort encourages a sigh to leave my lungs as I give into exhaustion.
My mind instantly floats into a waking dream, forgetting all else around me.
Dull images of rainbows dance in methodical waves behind my eyelids. Their colors fade in and out of sight against soft grays. My eyes follow their colorful vibrations that now begin to trace the edges of tulips and forest grass. Shadows breathe with shimmering indigo, trembling with life.
Tranquility fills me as I curiously observe this otherworldly nature. Gentle winds weave through lupines, petunias and hollyhocks. I am not awake enough to question my surroundings, but my entire being starts to hum as I surrender to this vision.
A knowingness lifts a serene smile at the corners of my lips as I realize what this is.
This is my heart. Somehow, I have entered my highest state and here, I am all knowing. These geometric swirls, flowers, and skies are my Soul. Even the grass is Me.
In humble acceptance, I melt into mySelf, allowing peace to overcome my every sensation. Time and space are non-existent here. There is only stillness. Only now.
Moments pass before electrifying energy suddenly jolts my attention slightly awake. The rainbow colors become as vibrant as the sun with rose, lavender and sunflowers beginning to bloom all about the meadow. They pop up one after the other, now hugging each other close. The soothing grey turns into lucid gold glittering with specks of white.
For as far out as I can see, currents of psychedelic light trace images of birds, flowers, trees, and stone. Although there is so much energy that my heart begins to speed up in pace, serenity remains.
I feel as though I am witnessing something as unimaginable as Heaven ItSelf. Excitement fills every vein in my body, causing me to stir and wake.
My eyes flash open, the vision gradually fading away as I realize my darling has returned to me. He came back to lay by my side. His arm is around me and my head is resting on his chest. I gasp as understanding sweeps over me.
"What?" Chris quickly asks, concerned for me.
My voice is sweet, completely entranced as I whisper eagerly, "I saw my energy alone. It was pretty, but was sort of faded. Then you came to lay with me and our energy became one. It was so beautiful! I saw it. You brought more flowers and gold. I became so colorful because of you. We're so strong together...It was like lightning suddenly struck me, but it was so peaceful too. I think...I think I saw our souls coming together as one."
"I like that," he whispers back, "That should be a poem."
Grandma...it's so nice to see you again...
Smiling graciously, my thoughts float in front of me in heavenly light as I admire my great grandmother sitting across from me. I remain silent as I recall our language barrier, but that is fine here. Words are unnecessary with our souls in this meeting place.
I don't believe I've ever seen her smile like this...so bright and content...so full of love.
I know you're gone now. It's beautiful to know you've finally made peace with your life.
Her eyes gleam at me, the wrinkles on her face appearing smaller as her petite frame glows with a golden luminescence. She can feel my thoughts kiss her.
I gently reach out across the garden table between us, seeking to hold her hand in mine, but as I begin to near her, she allows herself to fall backwards; her smile brightening even more.
In mere seconds, a shimmering light engulfs her entire being, glittering silver and twinkling pearl.
A small stream behind her catches the wilted flowers her body has now taken form in.
Is this death? I ponder.
Observing in awe, the stream carries these deceased yet elegant blossoms beneath a glass wall that separates me from a future world. It glows with a snowy vignette about my vision as I peer in.
A slight gust of wind guides my attention upwards to notice a young girl approaching the crystal stream. Her face is dreary and pale, completely drawn by illness as she nears the end of her life.
A sweet smile enlivens her daunt face as she glimpses into the stream, now imperceptible to my eyes. She lifts what my great grandmother has become out of the water, though what was once wilted flowers has now become blooming roses.
In transparent wonder, I witness life enter this young girl. Her shoulders lift as she inhales the scent of the roses and her skin takes on a deep tan as though the sun has kissed her. Beryl eyes begin to sparkle beneath her lashes as she lifts them to meet mine.
We smile to one another in perfect love as we feel each other's heart's embrace.
Until we meet again...We whisper in thought.
Leisurely, I lift my palm to wave goodbye as the girl in the translucent glass mirrors my action. She soon fades into the haze of smokey white as I return to my present world.
About this Page
This page will contain a few of my short stories that are only about a page in length. Longer stories will be put into my future book of short stories. I am always inspired by life and all that surrounds me, usually finding myself in awe with small moments in life that I do my best to capture in detail to articulate through words. My goal is to always invite my readers into a world where a single moment feels like an eternity and for their minds to delve deep into the sensations felt by my characters. These stories are mostly inspired by my lucid dreams or personal experiences.
